"This practical workbook is for all students of Japanese who want to learn the basic phonetic writing systems in use by the Japanese. This workbook is a self-contained course, which can be used both for independent study or in the classroom. It can also serve as an ideal supplement to any basic conversation course in Japanese. The two sets of phonetic characters, hiragana and katakana, are known collectively as kana. Since hiragana is usually taught first in Japanese schools, it is presented in the first section of this workbook, followed by katakana.
