"Max Friedlander's From Van Eyck to Bruegel was first published in 1916, but still retains its importance as the standard work on early Netherlandish painting. Friedländer wrote with unrivalled authority. and his direct approach, concise style and freedom from jargon have gained for this work a secure place in the literature of art history. It is still indispensable for our knowledge and appreciation of the period. Separate chapters are devoted to Jan van Eyck, Petrus Christus, Rogier van der Weyden, Dieric Bouts, Hugo van der Goes, Hans Memlinc, Gerard David, Geertgen tot Sint Jans, Jerome Bosch, Quentin Massys, Joachim de Patenier, Joos van Cleve, Jan Provost, Jan Gossaert, Jan Joest, Jan Mostaert, Lucas van Leyden, Jan van Scorel and Pieter Bruegel. In addition there are chapters on the geography of Netherlandish art and on the style of the sixteenth century. The 300 illustrations in this edition reproduce all the paintings which the author discusses in some detail, as well as additional examples of each artist's work, thus creating a visual companion to the text and a survey of 150 years of Netherlandish painting."
